Lesson Two: Values Clarification Research Brief

Helping students connect with their values, or what’s important to them, has a wide range of benefits. It has been shown to directly reduce stress. Clarity about values, about what kind of person they want to be, gives students a compass bearing to guide their behavior, a tool to make better decisions and choices. Thinking about values boosts resilience during difficult times. In fact, connecting to personal values has even been found to boost students’ academic achievement in ways that last. Being in touch with values is a way for students to develop a sense of purpose or meaning, which increases health and wellbeing. One of life’s pitfalls is reacting impulsively to situations and stressors. Learning to connect and check in with their values provides students with a guide to responsible decision-making while connecting them to their culture.
